Modeling Comp Cards

A comp card, also known as a composite card, Z card, or Sed card, is an essential marketing tool for aspiring models. Think of it as a model’s business card and a condensed portfolio all in one. Its primary purpose is to quickly and effectively showcase a model’s look, versatility, and key statistics to potential agents and clients. 

Digital Comp Cards are available to photo session clients.

This is the most important element. A comp card features a selection of high-quality photos that demonstrate the model’s range.

• Typically, one side (usually the front) features a prominent headshot or a strong beauty shot that clearly shows the model’s face
• The other side (the back) includes several smaller images (usually 3-5) showcasing different looks, poses, and styles
• These might include a full-length body shot, a mid-length shot, and photos that convey different moods or demonstrate versatility in different types of clothing or settings (fashion, commercial, lifestyle, etc.)
• The photos should be clear, well-lit, and professionally taken
• They should accurately represent the model’s current appearance

The comp card also provides essential statistics that agencies and clients need to know. This typically includes:

• Model’s Name
• Height
• Bust, Waist, and Hip measurements (for female models)
• Chest, Waist, and Inseam measurements (for male models)
• Shoe size
• Eye color
• Hair color

Contact information (usually through their agency if signed, or personal contact if freelance)
Sometimes, other details like dress size, suit size, or any unique features are included.

Comp cards are used in various ways within the modeling industry:

• Applications to Agencies: Aspiring models include their comp card when applying to modeling agencies, either through online submissions or at open calls. It gives the agency a quick overview of their potential
• Castings and Go-Sees: Models leave their comp card with casting directors or clients after auditions or meetings as a reminder of their look and stats
• Networking: Models use comp cards to introduce themselves to photographers, stylists, and other industry professionals
• Showcasing Versatility: The multiple images on a comp card allow models to demonstrate their ability to embody different looks and styles, which is crucial for booking diverse jobs

While traditionally printed on sturdy cardstock (often around 5.5″ x 8.5″), digital comp cards are also common now, easily shared via email or online portfolios.
